Moosic
Moosic is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, with a population of approximately 5,500 people. The area was originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans, and European settlement began in the late 1700s. The borough was officially incorporated in 1898, and the town’s name is derived from the Lenni Lenape word “monoshak”, which means “elk place.”
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Moosic was a major center for coal mining, with several large mines operating in the area. The mining industry declined in the mid-20th century, and today, Moosic is primarily a residential community with several businesses and industries located in the borough.
One of the most notable events in Moosic’s history occurred in 1926, when the town was struck by a tornado that caused significant damage and several fatalities. In more recent times, Moosic has been known for its proximity to Montage Mountain, a popular ski resort and waterpark located just outside the borough.
Visitors to Moosic can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and fishing at nearby parks and lakes. The borough is also home to PNC Field, the home ballpark of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the New York Yankees. Additionally, Moosic is located just a short drive from several other attractions in the Scranton area, including the Steamtown National Historic Site and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour.
