Waymart

Waymart is a borough located in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in the northern part of the state, near the border with New York. Waymart was incorporated as a borough in 1878, but its history dates back to the early 19th century.

In the early 1800s, Waymart was known as Belmont, named after a famous horse race in England. The town was located on the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which was used to transport coal and other goods from the coal fields in northeastern Pennsylvania to New York City. The canal played a significant role in the development of Waymart and the surrounding areas.

During the Civil War, Waymart was the site of a Union Army hospital, where wounded soldiers were treated. After the war, the town continued to grow and prosper, with the arrival of the railroad in the 1860s and the construction of the Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad in the 1870s.

In the 20th century, Waymart became known for its many resorts and tourist attractions, including the Camp Ladore retreat center, which was established by the Salvation Army in 1960. The town also has a rich cultural heritage, with several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Stourbridge Lion locomotive, which is on display at the Wayne County Historical Society Museum.
