White Mills

White Mills is a small village in northeastern Pennsylvania located in Wayne County. The village was founded in the early 19th century and is named after the White family, who settled in the area in the 1820s.

White Mills played an important role in the history of the region due to the presence of a large textile mill. The mill was established in 1836 and was one of the largest and most advanced textile mills in the United States at the time. It produced woolen goods and blankets and employed many local residents, including immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and Italy.

During the Civil War, the White Mills mill was used to produce blankets and uniforms for Union soldiers. The mill continued to operate for many years after the war, but eventually fell into decline and was abandoned in the early 20th century.

Today, White Mills is a quiet village with a few historic buildings and landmarks that pay tribute to its past. One of the most notable is the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary and Museum, which is located in a former glass factory that was established in the 1850s. The factory produced some of the finest cut glass in the country and was instrumental in making White Mills a center for the glass industry.

The sanctuary and museum now feature exhibits on the history of the glass industry and the natural environment of the region, as well as hiking trails and other outdoor activities. Visitors can also explore the nearby Lackawaxen River, which runs through White Mills and offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.
